BIO

Every house has a door derives its name from a notion of aesthetic hospitality: that each project welcomes a new group of diverse collaborators, including emerging artists; and that the work extends invitations through direct audience address and varied presentational modes. Founded in 2008 by director Lin Hixson and dramaturg Matthew Goulish after a 20-year collaboration as founders of Goat Island, Every house has developed and presented three performances to date, and will premier a fourth, Testimonium, in October 2013 at The Storefront Theater in Chicago.

 

DESCRIPTION

They’re Mending the Great Forest Highway weaves choreography, narration, theater, and music into a hybrid performance event. It features an intricate high-energy dance for three men (Matthew Goulish, Jeff Harms, and John Rich) directed by Lin Hixson with an original score performed live by Liz Payne. The work takes its title from one of Béla Bartók’s 8 Hungarian Folksongs composed in 1917, and adopts its structure from another Bartók composition, the trio Contrasts for violin, clarinet, and piano, commissioned by Benny Goodman in 1938. Each dancer’s part corresponds exactly in timing, dynamics, and repetition with that of one of the instruments. Movements derive from found YouTube fragments, gestures extracted from Georg Büchner’s play Woyzeck, and inventions in responses to Hixson’s choreographic directives. The young performer Hannah Geil-Neufeld plays director Lin Hixson, sharing rehearsal notes and personal reflections with the audience in a monologue introduction, and orchestrating the event’s complex epilogue.

The creation of this performance has been supported by a Lab Artist Award from the Chicago Dancemakers Forum, and an artist grant to director Lin Hixson from the Illinois Arts Council.
